Supernova 2008eu

SN 2008eu was the fourteenth supernova discovered by BRASS. This SN was found on 2008 August 9.17 in galaxy ESO 289-010, located at RA 22h16m43.3s, Dec -47d07m07s (2000.0), through images obtained at the CEAMIG-REA Observatory at Belo Horizonte, Brasil. Confirmation came through CBET 1467, dated August 10, 2008.

ESO 289-010 in Grus is a barred spiral of morphological class SB(s)d ?, according to NED (NASA Extragalactic Database). This is a edge-on galaxy with apparent size 2.46 x 0.26 arcmin. Its recession velocity and redshift are estimated respectively as (2793 +/- 5) km/s and (0.009318 +/- 0.000017), also from NED.This means a distance around 39.9 megaparsec (some 130 million light-years), if we assume a Hubble constant of 70 km/s.Mpc. Given that distance, our apparent magnitude estimate (15.6) at discovery would mean an absolute magnitude of -17.5.

Astrometric position of SN 2008eu is RA 22h16m44s.39, Dec -47d07'12".6 (2000.0). Spectra of this SN were not available at the time this text was being written.
